December

While it’s already January, this is technically the final update of 2021 - looking at the month of December, which has been extremely productive. Taking advantage of a 2 week winter holiday, I became a productive machine, working from 9am till 10pm every day with no breaks, to finish Chapters v2, the biggest project since Dashboard v2, which launched at the same time last year.

While that's the bulk of the update, as usual there are minor improvements here and there, which you can read in the changlog linked below ->

It’s here - the much-awaited ability to not only select from available chapters but even manually set any chapter and volume you want. There has been a lot of complicated changes involved to make this feature happen, so expect issues short-term, as I gather feedback and improve things. Anyhow, with how much has changed, there is a new entry in Feature Deep-Dives, so head over there to get all the details:

Another significant update for many of you would be the change in how Webtoon chapters are tracked. Previously, I would try to figure out the chapter and volume from the chapter title itself… but due to Webtoon having 0 consistency, there was a never-ending number of problems. See for yourself, some of the chapter ‘formats’ that Webtoon has:

You get the idea... So instead, I am now using their internal chapter counter (One next to # in the screenshots above), which you can see here. Due to how that works, it might not correlate to the chapter mentioned in the title, but I had to make this change, to make this site more reliable and stop it from being never-ending stress for me.

I’d recommend you check out the full changelog, but I’ve had a chance to address quite a significant number of bugs and simplify codebase itself, to make bugs less likely to occur to begin with. Some highlights are:

  1. More reliable MangaDex and MangaHub updates

  2. No ‘No chapters available’ for Asura Scans and some other groups

  3. No incorrect total count of entries per list / overall in your Dashboard

I am very happy with the results of the past month. Chapters v2 has been a feature I wanted to work on for the longest time and this is the last crucial feature that was missing from Kenmei. With this out of the way, we'll be soon transitioning from Alpha into Beta!

So for the upcoming month, I’ll be focusing on cleaning up and fixing any bugs that come up. I can also address a significant chunk of technical debt now, which I will be focusing on. After that, I should be able to start adding support for new sites and get back to working on Kenmei Extension

Current focus:

  1. Bug hunting and fixing

  2. Data Pipeline Improvements

  3. Kenmei Extension
