March

A quiet month when it comes to updates due to a 2 week holiday taken.

This month doesn't have too many updates - as I took a 2 week holiday, I tried to relax and not work on Kenmei during that time, as I usually would. As a result, I've mostly spent my time working on non-code related tasks and planning for the months ahead. But there have been some developments, mainly Reporting v2, which will become a cornerstone for future Kenmei growth and Discovery mode.

📋Changelog

⚠️Reporting v2

As mentioned last month, I've started working on the overhaul of reporting on Kenmei. It's quite a broad term, but it revolves around - reporting incorrect data, reporting duplicates, suggesting new series to add and so on.

Now that all suggested series, except MangaDex, go through a review process - I've started to spend too much time trying to resolve them manually. Moreover, as we grow, this task will become harder and harder to do on my own, so I've always planned on getting volunteers to help maintain Kenmei database.

With that in mind, Reporting v2 is about centralising the functionality as well as providing a unified UI for myself and future Data Moderators, so that anyone, provided they have access, would be able to address reports made by all of you.

The work is around 60% done, but I have already started using it day to day, and it has already drastically cut down time it takes to review newly suggested series. I plan to continue to refine and finalise it next month, as well as start to think about the process of onboarding the first Data Moderator. Watch this space!

🖼️Improved Covers CDN

Another improvement I've been working on - was the evaluation of a better CDN (meaning a way to provide you with covers quickly, regardless of where you are in the world) that is currently used.

This is most noticeable to Premium members, who had issues with some covers not loading for a few months now. Unfortunately switching from Amazon S3 to DigitalOcean, while improved some things, did deteriorate others - specifically the reliability of the cover delivery

With that in mind, I've evaluated a couple of alternatives and decided to go with Bunny CDN, which is currently being trialled. So far it has been quite successful and I am considering adopting it fully going forward. Having a reliable CDN is extremely important, especially as we are getting closer to Discovery mode being released

📈 Progress Overview

There is no particular change in the upcoming work for the month of April. Due to this month being quiet, I am focusing on wrapping up Reporting v2 and other work that I've started.

I expect the next couple of months continue to be quite sparse on big updates, as there is a lot to improve and fix in preparation for Discovery mode, which is the most important work to be done this year.

Here's the breakdown of the priorities for the next month:

  • Reporting v2

  • Data Pipeline Improvements

  • Bug fixing & across the board improvements

  • Kenmei Extension
