October

Month of fixes and QoL improvements across the platform, including new theme tags

After big launches in September, October was spent addressing long-standing tech debt and bugs. As can be seen from the changelog, lots of things were fixed and improved, that have been left unattended for way too long. But in November, I am back to focusing on big features

📋Changelog

While most of the month was spent fixing under-the-hood issues, I wanted to highlight this specific change, which might have confused some.

With Series Details being publically rolled out, I am starting gradual changes to linking inside Kenmei. As Kenmei is a series tracker and a discovery service, the plan is to mainly link internally to Kenmei resources, rather than directly to the supported sources.

With that in mind, Quick Search results now link to the Series Details by default, when clicking on any of the results. If you want to quickly add the series instead, there is now a + button to do just that.

Soon, you can expect to see Dashboard also start linking to Series Details by default, rather than to the source you are tracking (but there will be, of course, accessible linking to the source remaining)

🐛 Bug Fixes and QoL improvements

The bulk of the month has been spent on addressing various bugs and tech debt items of various severity. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Fix regression in Smart Suggestions v3, where suggestions would link to a source with the same or lower latest available chapter

  • Fix Webtoon timestamps being 1 day early across all their series

  • Added 6 more theme tags -> Boys' Love, Girls' Love, Villainess, Mecha, Vampire, Historical

  • Fix long-standing bug when new updates to the app would break internal links until the user refreshes the site

📈Progress Overview

This month's work has gone well overall, but I dropped the pace a bit too much at the end, as seen above. Some of the features and fixes I couldn't finish this month due to various unforeseen issues, so those will be rolled over to November.

After re-evaluating the roadmap, I decided to deprioritise Importing, as only about 10% of all new users have gone for the option when it was present in the onboarding.

So I am quite excited to start working on Social Features instead -> Starting with User Profiles, meaning you will finally be able to showcase yourself to others as well as more easily share your reading list with others. This is also the last core feature for Kenmei from my perspective, which would be another huge milestone for the platform.

I wouldn't expect to finish the User Profiles by the end of November, so don't hold your breath. But expect to see a lot of progress screenshots over on Discord!

Here's the updated list of priorities:

  1. Social Features v1

  2. Importing from MAL, Anilist and more

  3. Featured Collections

  4. Recommendation Engine v1
